This month I am finally working on a project of my own (which never happens). My bedroom. Of course I have all my fabrics and concept pulled together already. Narrowing the color down today.

I like colors that have depth and interact with light. Enter the lovely shade of blue above....

This color is rather popular with designers. I specified for a client's living room in the west end of Portland, Maine last year.

This is not the simplest color to work with, it REALLY depends on the lighting in the space. Large amounts of natural sun make it appear quite vibrant. Examples below:

Rooms with LITTLE natural sunlight will see the color appear more demure blue-gray. Examples below:

Light is the most important factor in choosing paint color. I don't receive much natural sun into this specific room, the color will appear rather mellow similar to the photo above. Prior to moving to Maine, I would not have chosen a color for the walls. I preferred beige, grays, or a mix of the two. However New England winters are sorely lacking in color and are LONG. Using more color inside meets the fundamental need for balance and makes those harsher seasons more beautiful.

As always, I will be using low VOC paint. If you do not know why that is important, let me know asap!

Notes from a Maine Interior Designer....Best Runners of the Season!

One of my duties as an Interior Designer is transforming spaces that are often overlooked. Have you ever put much thought into your hallway? A few choice pieces can turn one of the most used spaces into your home from blah to SPECTACULAR.

I love a good runner (long rug) because you can do more with pattern. The overall size is smaller so it won't be overwhelming. Get bold!

Angela Adams just introduced her newest collections, "pathways". If you have ever walked barefoot on her rugs, you can imagine why I am excited about this new collection. Lush, soft, and perfect for chilly nights.

"The series of rugs called "Pathways" are inspired by walks in the woods, on the beach and in the garden. They transform your home into inspiring spaces that remind us of our favorite places in nature and times spent there."

The organic shape is what drew me to the collection. The flowing lines and lack of hard edges will transform angular hallways!

"Stream" by Angela Adams. The loop and pile construction means there are different "heights" to the rugs.

This is a hallway that I designed over the summer. Simple in its elements (paint, art, rug, lighting) I wanted something that wouldn't clash with the FOUR rooms it opened into but also retain some style.

The runner is from Portland Rug Design.Julie Omsberg (owner) and I created the color palette (see below). It is wool and silk, the raised circles are silk and incredibly soft. Creating custom rugs with custom colors. Too fun!

The runner above is an indoor/outdoor runner from dash and albert. These are for those with messy puppies! They can be taken outside and hosed off to clean. I recommend them for enclosed porches and mudrooms (think salty boots!) Indoor/Outdoor rugs are great for very messy areas. However they are not plush so I recommend a good rug pad to keep it from slipping. You can buy them locally at http://www.bradfordsruggallery.com/

Practical tips for choosing a runner:

-High quality wool and woven silk are good choices. Yes, you will need to clean them once a year or so, but they outlast machine made rugs by decades.

-Don't be afraid of pattern and color. These are small compared to room sized rugs, so have fun.

-Texture! You will be walking on these barefoot at some point, so why not make that an enjoyable experience?

-Don't skimp on the rug pad. It extends the life of the rug and keeps it from moving.

-You can put a runner on top of carpet. Just use the proper rug pad.

Home Staging in Maine: featured property...

PSO Designer's Showhouse & Artist Freddy Silva

PSO Designer's Showhouse featured Artist: Ellen Thayer

Maine Artist Ellen Thayer created a one of a kind piece just for the PSO Designer's Showhouse. She was kind enough to work with my color palette and concept.

"Between the sun’s angle, the sky condition, and the surrounding environment, the magnificent range of colors in the resulting rhythmic water reflections have inspired eight of Ellen’s paintings to date. These mesmerizing reflections have a relaxing and meditative quality for the viewer. “Reflection, Oak Island” was created specifically for the hallway above the staircase to create a feeling of calm and repose."
Ellen is gaining recognition for her Reflections series, each of them different in color and mood, which I find appropriate because of how the Maine coastline changes its colors and moods throughout the year! I am so pleased with her stunning piece that supports the PSO.
More about the Artist:
As a former television meteorologist in Portland and Boston, Ellen Thayer has been a Maine island adventurer for most of her adult life. Living on Casco Bay in South Portland affords frequent boating and kayaking excursions where Ellen finds limitless artistic inspiration in the remarkable rocks, weathered shells, and driftwood as well as island vistas and calm coves. Ellen’s vast collections, from what the sea discards, inspire a variety of art forms and the images she captures on camera become vibrant oil paintings. Ellen has been painting in oil for over twenty years and continues her art education through various artist’s workshops. In recent years, Ellen’s commissions have expanded to include pet and people portraiture.

Ellen has also been a long time supporter of the Island Institute who works in close partnership with Maine’s year-round island and coastal communities to ensure that these special places remain vibrant and viable. Ellen donates ten percent of all sales to these two organizations. Her original piece inside the showhouse will support the PSO and an ever larger % is donated (Big talent = big heart).

PSO Showhouse Countdown: History and Inspiration via VOX Photographs

The PSO Designer's Showhouse is unique in that the house itself was built in 1920. The house was built in 1920 atop a portion of the John Bundy Brown Estate which was destroyed in 1915. Architect John P. Thomas built this spacious stone and slate tudor complete with a servants’ wing and chauffeur’s apartment above the garage for James C. Hamlen and his family (related to Hannibal Hamlin, Abraham Lincoln’s Vice President). (VIA PSO website)

So it's natural that my original design concept included art from the Maine Heritage Collection by VOX Contemporary Photography. I have worked with this Gallery before for my design clients, and am consistently amazed and the volume and quality of photographers that VOX represents.

Here is a glimpse into the Heritage pieces I am using-and you will have to guess WHICH ONES are actually in the house!

J.C. BICKNELL

John Carleton Bicknell was born on May 28, 1871. At the age 7 he nearly lost his life, and did lose his right arm, after falling out of a tree. Bicknell’s photographic business started circa 1902. The Golden Age of Hand-Painted Photography was 1900-1940. And with his studio located in Portland, he just happened to be working in one of the hotbeds of early 20th century hand-painted photography. Yet, although the hand-painted photography craze slowly declined during the 1930’s depression, we see that the Bicknell Picture Co. stayed in business into the early 1960’s and beyond. The vast majority of Bicknell pictures were taken in Maine, including Portland, Rangeley, Eustis, Bethel, and many other areas. He also took pictures in New Hampshire (North Conway, Franconia Notch), Vermont, and several other states. (Via unravel the gavel)

Ralph Farnham Blood

Ralph Farnham Blood's photography dates back to the 1930's and his wife, Laura Blood, hand colored all the photographs.The White House owns a large original of “Portland Head Light, 1931″.

COUNTING DOWN the days until the PSO Designer's Showhouse!

I moved to Maine in May of 2010, to an area called Munjoy Hill. I would walk the golden retriever past this beautiful studio and peer into the windows...it became quite a habit. When I found out I was going to participate in the PSO Designer's Showhouse, I summoned up the nerve to introduce myself to this awesome artist!

Maine artist, Laura Fuller lives and works in Portland, Maine. She grew up in Bath, Maine and has also lived in Paris, France. Laura was a founding owner of the Hay Gallery in Portland, Maine and now has the Laura FullerGlass Design Studio and Gallery on Munjoy Hill in Portland (my hood!)

Laura has been working in stained glass twenty years. She began putting three-dimensional objects in her panels while still in school. When discouraged by her instructor from this innovative technique, she committed to the craft of incorporating found objects into her complex glass pieces. Each unique relief expresses not only her story, but also that of the objects incorporated within.

For Laura, each object is a reflection of the complex narrative of life-- past, present and future:

"Life is change. That is the only reliable certainty. It is constantly and continually progressing and altering. Unexpected and uncertain in outcome, it is certain in process.Objects are our representatives. 'Living' solid, fruitful, domestic, useful lives: indepedently functional. These objects, having given 2 to 200 years of faithful service, became hidden. In drawers, closets, dumps, underground, and in the ocean --waiting.
Now newly born, part of a different whole. Suspended to be gazed at, in reverence. In honor of their, and our, past lives. The beauty is in the years of touch as marked by many hands. The experiences portrayed trigger memories, of events lived and imagined. And of what will become."

I commissioned a piece of Fuller Glass for the showhouse, and working with her has been a joy. I walked into her gallery a total stranger with a crazy idea, and have found a kindred spirit passionate about supporting the arts...and creating her own special space within the showhouse. She has combined the spirit of the Symphony Orchestra, Interior Design, our shared organic and the modern influences, the proximity to the ocean....all in one piece. Here is about 25% of the piece, a partial sneak preview:

My inspiration for "Adagio" was the simple, elegant beauty in the shape of a violin. And a sense of peace.-Laura Fuller

Nope! That's all you get to see! So far every person who has seen this piece has been amazed, I couldn't be happier with the response. I chose a great crystal flushmount light fixture for the space that casts tiny rainbows on the walls surrounding it-the tiny entry now feels like another world.

When asked for a favorite quote or words to live by, her response was "Do all things with love."
Hmmn....is that why I love her work?

Portland Symphony Orchestra 2011 Designer's Showhouse Countdown!

One week to go!
I have been getting MANY questions about the process, so lets address them...

149 Western Promenade, Portland!

For those of you who are wondering, gracious homeowners (Ed Gardner and Steve DiMuccio) moved out of their home and allowed 17 designers to each have their own space to design, create, and often demo/rebuild. Each designer funds their participation. Why? Because this is the largest fundraiser for the Portland Symphony Orchestra, and only occurs every 2-3 years. Hundreds of volunteers participate.
The designers compete to earn a spot within the house. We submit proposals, and a board/committee chooses which design they feel best fits the space.

We install our designs from August 4th-August 31st. This year was a bit different as the projects included a kitchen upgrade/remodel, new tile in the upstairs bath, and a complete remodel of the master bath. Many of the spaces had only a few days to install because of the construction debris. It was a bit like an episode of Extreme Home Makeover! So far all of the results have been beautiful and the remodeling is a beautiful mix of modern technology with respect to the historic character of the house.

I can finally show my design presentation for my space. Many changes occur from concept to completion, so I am not giving anything away. This is simply a peek into how my creative brain works.

I love deep spice colors, for they are rather nuetral and pair well with other colors.

I left the living room rather open, as its large enough to fit a number of different furniture configurations. I have a hunch when this listing sells (quickly) I may keep the bench for myself and not put it back in my warehouse.

Every now and again I sell off excess inventory. I don't like using the same pieces over and over again.
Here is what is currently for sale:

This is a gorgeous French Style, uber heavy armoire. You can use it as a closet or elegant way to hide a tv. it has pieces for both.
New it would set you back over $3500. I think $900 is reasonable for used. If you have an offer that you think is reasonable, let me know.
The bottom portion has drawers behind the doors. The upper portion as a removable closet rod for hanging clothes OR a wooden insert that can fit DVD components and a TV. It has removable outlets inside it for cord control.
Overal dimensions: 88" high 27" deep 50" wide
The top piece is 56 high, bottom piece is 32" high. The two pieces are currently connected but come apart for moving. Its made WELL, heavy beautiful wood so it needs to be moved in two pieces.
If you are wanting to put a TV inside it, here is the interior space: 22.5 deep width 45.5 subtract 2" for outlets 48" tall not including curve.
Color is much deeper and richer than the photos.
YOU WILL NEED TO BRING MOVERS. Preferably 2 guys with moving straps. I like to use a local moving company, they are priced awesome and have moved this before. localmuscle@gmail.com, think the owner is Alex.

The legs do not detach so it makes home staging cumbersome for me. Comes with 4 side chairs and 2 arm chairs. one side chair and one arm chair need reupholstering. I think the whole set would look great reupholstered. Solid wood, no veneers, I can help load. $275 very VERY firm on price.

Bella and Cole, A (designer) Love Story.

What do you do when you have two friendly, rambunctious dogs and an ambitious remodeling project? Enlist the help of an interior designer who understands both aesthetics and function.

Here are some helpful hints from a project in Orange County, CA.

I love using darker grout as it is less likely to show dirt.

Lovely new kitchen, down to the the granite and backsplash. The wood floors, however....

Are tile! Yes, tile. Those wood floors are tile. They are made in both Italy and China (guess which is cheaper and which is higher quality?Yep). Using this type of type of tile requires a PERFECTLY level floor because we didn't use grout. A good tile installer is a valuable asset and often a rare treasure.
Cole, seen above, likes to swim in the pool and bring all that lovely water inside. The rug sample he is posing on is 100% tufted acrylic. While it looks like wool, it's actually indestrucible, much like the one Bella is modeling below:

Not all man made rugs are the same. Some off gas (which is bad), others at Home Goods fall apart in weeks. If the rug is going to receive high traffic, let a pro guide you. Its worth the extra time to learn. The rug above still looks new (a couple years later).

The "formal" living room is very hard to damage. We added quite a bit of lighting to balance the dark colors. The palette of chocolate, cream, blues, and bronze tied the first floor together.

Formal drapery can also be a challenge with pets and children.

In the dining room we used exquisite faux silk panels. If anyone tries to tell you that silk drapery can be easily cleaned, fire them immeadiately. It is VERY difficult to find a company that can properly dry clean silk. Hence, faux silk which is easier to clean and much harder to get dirty! We did sheer panels that had a chocolate background with blue pattern. Since dogs like to look out the window and protect their domain, accept the fact their fur is going to rub against the fabric-and design around it! Which we did.

The living room drapery was also faux silk. We did pattern on these windows as all the upholstery was solid.

Inexpensive Backsplash Solutions-Tips from a Maine Interior Designer

I am often asked about backsplashes-are they really that important? YES. Yes they are. How clean is the wall behind your stove right now? That's what I thought....

Home sellers are often trying to improve on a budget. My #1 recommendation is to use the simple glass tile to update. Several recent home staging clients asked for other ideas,so here are my favorite alternatives:

Bead board/wainscoting, use sparingly!

TIN and painted tin-don't do the fake tin/plastic adhesive tiles, either. Do the real ones they are not expensive. Great improvement on a budget.

The New Normal:Sofas-Tips from a Maine Interior Designer

Last week I worked with a client on space planning a large room. Part of the challenge was the amount of SPACE that large rolled/puffy sofa arms require. Did you know that a track or small arm on a sofa will save you between 12-24 inches of space? Multiply that times the number of upholstered pieces you have in a room...that is how your room got so small. Put your furniture on a diet...

The Griffin Sofa by Ballard Designs will seat just as many people as the larger sofas, but the design itself is why the overall dimensions are smaller (slim arms/back).

The Landon Sofa by Pottery Barn

The last five years has brought about a change in upholstery styles. I am seeing two very defined trends-one celebrates clean, modern lines without sacrificing comfort and tends to be smaller scale, the other incorporates vintage/historic inspired style but less fussy.

Introducing Michael Jon Designs fabric at Fiore Interiors.

I traveled to (BACK) to Los Angeles a couple times this summer, and as always I stop into design centers and hipster design boutiques that cater to celebrities/designers. While traveling to the markets in North Carolina, Las Vegas, and New York is great-the strongest trends originate in smaller Hollywood boutiques FIRST. Then they filter through the manufacturers,simplified a bit more for the masses (more on that tomorrow). The photos above and below and from a hipster places that must remain anonymous...

Very glam Hollywood which is their signature look that didn't surprise me. What DID surprise me was the fabric!

MJD, or Michael Jon Designs is an affordable fabric/textiles manufacturer located in Los Angeles. I have an account with them, and go to them for durable, basic fabric. This year they debuted a very fashion forward, colorful collection that I adore.

The fabrics are still AFFORDABLE and DURABLE...so hipster style without breaking the bank...unless you are shopping in Hollywood and still paying $4000 for a sofa (see why I won't mention the boutique!).

Here are some of my favorite new patterns:

Ok, the red and orange is not for everyone, but add the orange and red accent pillows to a chocolate or khaki sofa=amazing.

And yes, I am confident this fabric line is suitable for New England. Durable solids and textures, fun patterns, and beautiful color to warm us during cold winters.

What I liked most about this home (besides the kitchen, which is gorgeous) was the privacy. It's in a pretty community in Scarborough, Maine, but it has a little road/extended driveway of its own through a wooded area. It feels secluded and private while being accessible, which is rare for developments.

The sunroom is bigger than my first apartment in L.A :) and I would probably be either a large game/entertainment space or a room to let the kids play and create. I staged it for the owners who have taken excellent care the property.

Here is a glimpse into the oldest house on the western promenade in Portland, Maine.

The breakfast room exists to eat in, but also to enjoy the amazing gardens. So I (Vanessa Helmick of Fiore Interiors) did a simple update to the room that reflects the owner's current style but also complements the garden view. Open, airy, and serene.

Maine Makeover Event!

We all love makeovers-home makeovers, beauty makeovers, redoing our offices, etc. ABC's Extreme Makeover, Home Edition, is further proof of our love of improvement (preferably within 60 minutes of course).

Unfortunately victims of domestic violence don't have a safe home or environment to makeover. Caring Unlimited in Maine offers a wide range of support to victims: 24 hr hot lines, emergency shelters, legal aid, transitional housing, and education/support groups. Floor dilemma

This is more Miz M, who works from home and has concrete floors in her office space. She wants color and style. I wanted to post them in a private album on FB so I didn't have to worry about citing sources-but the facebook is being uncooperative. So here you go:

A diamond pattern, perhaps in Apple and Black tones would add green (for prosperity :) and tie in the black furniture. We should also add cool hanging black lights/lanterns.

You could paint an area rug!

Another great option is staining the floors a warm tone. It's pretty easy if you are wanting a mottled/organic effect. See the DIY instructions here.

And last but not least, this floor was done by a professional artist and we would probably have to sell your firstborn to pay for it, but isn't it fun?

Historic Interior Design in Portland, Maine (Part 2)

119 Pine St. in Portland Maine was the home of this famous, historic architect. He was also the mentor to John Calvin Stephens. Together the influenced Maine and New England architecture. One of the things I love about 119 Pine St is the consistent attention to detail. The laurel wreath you see above in the original stained glass...

...can also be found in much of the original door hardware.

I felt it my duty as an Interior Designer to use authentic decorations-antique books, historical artwork, hand knotted rugs, etc.

Ralph Farnham Blood was a photographer in Maine in the 1930's. His family members recently added color (by hand) to his work. The result is exquisite, a marriage of artistic vision and Maine history-so I HAD to work these pieces into the decor.

Historic Interior Design in Portland, Maine (Part 1)

Warning-will be directly quoting history books :)

I was asked to help prepare the Francis Fassett house in Portland for sale. It was quite an honor considering the prestige and history of the property.

Francis Henry Fassett (June 25, 1823 - November 1, 1908) was an American architect in Maine who built as many as 400 homes and buildings throughout the state... he especially influenced the look of Portland.

He built this duplex in 1876. The right side was for his son, Edward, and the left side was for himself.

Let me show you why he kept the left side...

The light! Oh what glorious light this home has. I began working on it in snowy February. What a fabulous setting in which to be creative and inspired. The challenge was to show the home without distracting from the features. Clean, elegant, non-competitive. :)

The home is on the Historic Register in Portland, so I tried to bring in elegant but timeless touches.

Note the original decorative painted accents throughout the house.

Can anyone else imagine the parties in the roaring twenties? Double Foyers are spacious. If these walls could talk..

I particularly love the enclosed sun room. All of the windows open, there is a radiator to heat the room during winter months...more celebration of light. How appropriate.

During the 1870s, Fassett was the leading architect in both the city and state. I consider it a bit of a miracle (and a testament to the Maine Historical Society) that this house was not torn down in favor of condos. They simply don't build houses this solid anymore.

I just received my order of wallpaper for a project I am working on in the west end of Portland.
We are transforming a short, awkward wall in an entry into an airy, welcoming space.

The pattern is called Waterbury Trail in Aqua by Thibaut and was suprisingly affordable!

Wallpaper can be used in large or small amounts. An entire room, a wall, an simply an alcove...when designer properly the results can be stunning.

A highly textured grasscloth is both elegant and simple. This is great for those not interested in seeing pattern on the walls, or have pattern in OTHER rooms and want to balance out the overall design.

"Tracy was an architecture student at Virginia Tech when first mesmerized by a glassblower's photo in a RISD catalogue. Soon she had applied for a transfer and moved to Providence for the glass BFA that would change her life. She has honed her craft in such diverse locales as a 13th century Belgian convent's crystal factory and Dale Chihuly's renowned Pilchuck School of Glass, where she was mentored by Venetian maestri-in-residence.

The furnace burns 24 hours a day with molten glass at the ready. Colored rods, varying in thickness, are cut, fused, rolled and mouthblown in a dance of heat, urgency and vision. Every piece is made to order; Tracy is the sole designer. She and her assistants blow the glass onsite before assembling the components into finished commissioned pieces."

Perhaps I am having withdrawals from my Turquoise Tuesday post. Or maybe its all the soft blues I use in Maine Interior Design lately. Whatever it is, this room incorporates some of my personal nuerotic design obsessions.

Please not I do not inflict these on my clients unless requested...

I love velvet. See above.
I love floor to ceiling simple drapery that control light.
I hate big arms on sofas and personally don't want any at all.
I PREACH on designing around nuetrals for your foundation pieces so you can change out your accent color.
I love turquoise.
I am tall and work constantly, so I need a sofa long enough to doze off on...

Drapery is an important ingredient in a well designed home. Unfortunately custom window treatments can get expensive and most often store bought drapery does not delivery the desired result. NEW to Fiore is a "SEMI-CUSTOM" line. SO excited! Here are some examples

The line, Wildcat,offers a specific selection of fabrics (silks, polys, linens,cool textures,and several types of sheers). From there we choose header, ie pleat vs grommet.Then the size, lining (flannel vs blackout or none at all).

Obviously you need a designer with years of experience to guide you. Rather important. (moi!)

And last but not least, are the details! We can add layers of fabric, quilt it, or indulge in embellishments for a more tailored look.

I am blessed to live in a city that is overflowing with creativity. Once a week I will be highlighting artists and artisans that live in Maine. From art, to photography-to furniture and fashion...if it incorporates color and inspiration (and if I could use it tastefully as an Interior Designer in Maine) then you will find it here. On Wednesdays.

Ellen Thayer is an artist in South Portland, Maine with many artistic talents. I am quite taken with her painting, color, and obviously unique applications of both.

While she does traditional oil paintings (my favorites are the mesmerizing water reflections) she is also creating one of a kind "hearth art".

I love these pieces because they are built for something practical: covering a fireplace during the non working months, yet they incorporate beauty and add authenticity to a space at the same time.
Yes, I also am inclined to like ANYTHING pretty that pairs well with warm weather.

Ellen has also begun to do a small collection of screens with shells. This is not your typical shabby chic/glued piece. She creates them with intense attention to detail and the inspirations span nautical, traditional, and nature (above).

I believer in using wallpaper sparingly and with a purpose.

I hear buzz about this "trend"...wallpapering the ceiling only.

I love this room.

BUT I don't agree it is a new trend.

Mary Poppins circa 1964...that's damask wallpaer on the ceiling!

I often say that I have a photographic memory ONLY for things that are only useful in my field. Nothing else. Not even close. I can remember what trim a colleague used on a pillow in 2005. The manufacturer, price, and larger design scheme. None of these details are relevant to everyday life, but this is just ME.

Example: Sex and the City 2...I saw the fabric (Belgravia/Lee Jofa) on a chair this month in the Lee Jofa showroom in Boston.

BOLD COLOR ALERT

I feel we need to look at some color to warm us in the midst of this New England snowstorm.

Same home, different colors:

My first reaction, was, REALLY? Who redesigns their own home and posts it as part of their portfolio? C'mon. Then after some thought I decided that design clients probably won't let us put pink/orange on the walls very often....and its's REALLY fun to see! I enjoy both interpretations and appreciate the layered color, textures, and overall eclectic style.

This is the designer's bedroom, she had no room for a headboard so created her own out of wallpaper (Chiang Mai Dragon from F. Schumacher & Co.) and framed it with molding (genius). Sconces eliminate the need for nightstands. Great solutions and style for a small space.

Chelsea Gray in an apartment-what a difference bold neutrals can make!

I was consulting inside a hair salon yesterday, hoping the owner will let go of her peach and green striped in favor of two shades of gray, with black, white, and ocean accents. Her work is quite chic and I hope she allows her space to reflect her work.

I spy silver, gray, and charcoal in this room.

Because LIGHT is the biggest consideration in choosing paint color, here are some shades to play with. Keep in mind the light in your space cannot be replicated inside a paint store, so tester pots are key.

Benjamin Moore's Elephant Gray for when you want more silver.

BM's Gray Tint

For a bluer undertone, which is often a nice way to go, try Benjamin Moore's Oxford Gray.

Do's and Don'ts:

DON'T Do this unless you are really good at visualizing:

Paint color (like all color) looks different when next to another color. It can take on a different hue. Narrow your choices to two or three, paint LARGE pieces of paper, and hang one at a time for a day or two.

DO:

Use healthy paint. Benjamin Moore's Aura covers like a dream. It can often take one coat, without primer, and is missing the nasty chemicals found in most big box stores.

If you have little ones I recommend Natura. The chemicals, called VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) off-gas and irritate lungs and are linked to other diseases.

Nancy Tilghman, a former CNN producer, and designer Daniel Sachs, used turquoise (fabric) lined shelves to display an 8 year old's toy collection.

South Carolina-based designer, Angie Hranowsky did an amazing job, in my humble opinion. The colors won't need updating for many years to come, and very gender neutral!

This week Pantone announced their forecast for 2011. Dubbed the Color of the Year, I introduce Honeysuckle.

My thoughts? IT'S PINK!
While I applaud the vibrancy and cheerfulness, I will only use it when its appropriate. In Interiors, that means sparingly. I prefer to pair it with silver rather than chocolate, creamy beige rather than black and white.

Turquoise Tuesday, the countdown

Pantone is gearing up to announce the color of 2011, so these will be the final few turquoise tuesday posts. My, my, what a year it's been.
Critics call Turquoise a trend. It isn't...this is why:

Tranquility, water, and as we go into winter...warmth. Yes, a cool color can warm you.

That is why I don't feel it is limited to a trend. It can be done quite classic, modern, bohemian-whatever you need to call it!

High-gloss walls in the library have many coats of Benjamin Moore’s Bermuda Turquoise — “a perfectly finessed balance of green and blue,” says Designer Rob Southern.

I think I recently used the same color in Portland, near the Eastern Prom, but not in high-gloss!

1. People don’t simply buy houses; they buy the next chapter of their lives.

This is an emotional experience and emotion influences what people buy and how much they will pay. Vacant houses are devoid of life, and the chance to make an emotional connection is lost.

2. Vacancy distracts buyers from looking at the house itself.
They wonder: “Is this a divorce? Why did they move out? Are they selling because they have money problems? Is this home hard to sell?” They’ll make a low-ball offer, thinking the owner is desperate.

3. When a house is vacant, buyers focus on flaws.
They look at nail holes, carpet wear and gaps in the molding rather than how the space works. In a vacant house, floors, walls and ceilings are all buyers see. This drives the price down.

4. People can’t visualize how furniture fits.

Home sellers who make the following mistakes, when preparing their homes for sale, will have their homes on the market for a lot longer than they want...and they will probably have to reduce their asking price.

1) Not Updating the Kitchen or Bathrooms. These are the two most important rooms in the house...the ones that make or break the ability to get an offer. And you don't even have to completely gut the kitchen or bath. Even simple updates like painting your cabinets will create a new look that will be very appealing to a buyer. Buyers want a home that is move-in ready - but you don't have to replace everything in a kitchen or bath to achieve that. New faucets, clean and sparkling sinks, uncluttered countertops and new hardware can really spruce up these rooms. If the budget permits - do updated appliances, better countertops and new flooring.

2) Not Caring About Curb Appeal. A buyer prejudges a home in 12 seconds from the outside of a home. That's why curb appeal is so very important if you want to attract a buyer to "come in." It's like the cover of a book - if the cover doesn't look interesting...chances are the book will be passed over.

3) Not De-Cluttering, Cleaning and Deodorizing. If you take the time to remove clutter, edit the amount of furniture you have in your rooms and clean your home to shine like a diamond - your space will look larger, more pristine and well-cared for. Endless knickknacks and collectibles in cabinets, magnets on the fridge and family photos all over the place deter potential buyers from envisioning themselves living in the home. It's best to pack up the treasures and make all surfaces shine. Making your house smell sunshine clean is also very important. You want to remove as many negatives as possible when your home is up for sale.

4) Keeping Taste-Specific Furniture, Carpeting, Colors and Accessories as Part of the Decor. If you bought your home in the 70s or 80s and if the decor still reflects those eras, your home won't be on a potential buyers "make an offer" list. Odd colored carpets (teal is a big no-no), draperies, wall colors etc will not be appealing to a broad range of buyer. Why? Number one, not everyone has furniture that would go with specific colors - that's why neutral colors are the best to use when getting your home ready for sale Tip: A buyer should not be able to tell if the seller is 90 or 30 years old and whether the seller is male or female.

5)Trying to Sell A Home When It's Vacant. A home with no furniture is soulless and very unappealing. A vacant home can also translate into "desperate seller" in buyer-speak. The buyer gets the idea that a seller really needs to sell the home and so they assume the seller will take a lower offer. A vacant home never gets a full asking price offer - always lower. It's much more prudent to have a competent home stager bring in furniture and accessories - and make the home warm and livable. In addition, a vacant room actually looks smaller than it is. Plus - a buyer will only focus on the negatives of a space because there is nothing else to focus on.
Every hairline crack, every speck of dust...any minute "less then perfect" aspect of a house is magnified when it's vacant.

6) Not Letting in as Much Light in to the House. Dark, heavy draperies, closed vertical blinds...any window covering that blocks light from coming in to a house - will not make the buyer feel that the home is bright and airy. You have to find ways to "steal the sunlight," as real estate guru Barbara Corcoran says. Add more light fixtures, uplights and take dark shades off your table lamps - replace with more translucent covers that will emit more light.

7) Refusing to Put Any Money into Necessary Repairs, Improving the House or Staging Before Selling. For every deferred repair, the homeowner will receive less money offered for the house. Avoid possible buyer objections by fixing the things that are wrong with the home. A wife may fall in love with a kitchen - but her husband will be looking at very crack, every bulge in the wall that spells water trouble and every electrical no-no in the house. Fix things before you have a buyer offer you less than you want. The money you spend on repairs will net you a bigger profit on your home. Also, consider hiring a home stager - even just for a consultation. Staging is an investment - not a cost. Plus, it's tax deductible. For every dollar you spend on staging, you get $3 in return.
8) Keeping Fido and Kitty at the Home When it's Being Shown. Many times I have been to Open Houses where I have been greeted by the family cat or dog. I have also attended Open Houses where there are 4 or 5 dogs in a crate - and they are all yapping and barking so much that I can hardly hear what the realtor is saying to me! I've also seen wee wee pads here and there at Open Houses. I am an animal lover - so these things never bother me. But, what about any prospective buyer who might be allergic to cats or dogs? It's best to keep the family pet away for the Open House day - and any time the house is being shown. You should also remove any sign (or odor) of pet ownership.

9) Not Marketing the Home Properly with Great Online Photos. With over 80% of potential buyers searching online first before viewing a property, it's imperative that a home look beautiful online. Badly lit pictures, cluttered surfaces in the photos and even just pictures of the exterior of the home (and no interior shots) spell "not worth a visit" to a prospective buyer. Even worse is when there are no photos of the home. Take the time to do a great photo shoot. It will really pay off. Staged homes, by the way - look great online.

-Portland, ME: Staged a gorgeous home in less than a week. Pics to follow. Have a hunch I will have to go back and retrieve all furnishings and decor as it will go under contract quite fast.
-East End, Portland, ME: almost finished decorating a couple's first home together. Alot of vibrant colors including kelly green and TURQUOISE.
-Turks and Caicos: Vacation condo redo/update.
-Cumberland Foreside, ME: Family Room
-Naples, ME: Fireplace renovation/complete redesign, color schemes, drapery, and streamlining design.
-Portland, ME: Color Consulting and Design for Visual Display for a local jewelry designer.

I think I am forgetting some other projects, many of them thermal/insulating window covering solutions as that is a high priority this time of year!
Oh! This thursday I am speaking at a Real Estate Agent luncheon as a guest of Bank of America. Focus is on Real Estate Staging.
Maine is blossoming into more than I could have hoped for. Sometimes when you follow your heart (and your goals) the rest falls into place.

Turquoise Tuesday...almost

Pardon the lack of blogging, I am trying to catch up after a surprising whirlwind week.

Here is a glimpse of two recent projects....

The rug above (Amy Butler for Chandra)will find its home in the east end of Portland, Maine. It's new owner is trying to decide which striped dash and albert rug should go in the dining room as it will be visible. We will be doing a woven (washable) cotton striped rug under the dining table and the soft tufted wood, above, in the living room.

Onto a different project...and they are reading this and will probably realize I should be working on their project, not blogging (just kidding). Here is a glimpse at a color palette of upholstery that is 100% contract quality. We are using Lee Jofa Solarium (indoor/outdoor), Fabricut's sunbrella offerings, Duralee Pavillion (indoor/outdoor) and Robert Allen contract. Phew.

Yes, I will post the before and after pics after everything is completed!

The funny thing is those two projects are completely different in style, location, and function. What they have in common are vivacious Mainers who aren't afraid of color. How fun.

More projects to be revealed later this week.

Turquoise Tuesday: Adventures in Boston

I previously blogged about Turquoise and Red being a beautiful, if tricky, color combination.

I still love it. On a recent trip to the Boston Design Center I was reunited with one of my design weaknesses: Printed Linen fabrics by ROMO! .
Romo hails from the UK. I have yet to see a Romo fabric or wallcovering that didn't inspire me.

Their shade of blue is "mineral", while I understand its not a pure turquoise it's in the same family and the shade pairs beautifully with Red.

Lovebirds. Love them!

Chesterfield Madness

Modern interpretations of the classic chesterfield sofa have been trending strongly for several years.

For the more technical folks: The term "chesterfield" is a Canadian term equivalent to couch or sofa. The use of the term has been found to be widespread among older Canadians, but is quickly vanishing from Canadian English according to one survey done in the Golden Horseshoe region of Ontario in 1992.^[4] In the United Kingdom, the word refers to a particular style of sofa featuring a low rolled back and deep buttoning.

For you visual types, here are my favorite interpretations of the chesterfield. In some cases I use the term interpretation VERY loosely:

Creative Uprising: Online Shelter Magazines Alive and Booming!

Earlier in the year we wrote about print magazines closing (see article here) and great online magazines such as Lonny launching (go here).

Here is the current round up of shelter magazines. One of the nice things about being online is they are FREE to enjoy. However, if you lust for the feel of glossy heavy weight paper, like to bookmark with folded corners, and the habit of keeping design magazines in stacks brings you joy...several of these magazines are ready for subscribers!

Kelly LaPlante (Organic Interior Design) founded "The Standard" and launched it this month. In a nutshell, she believes green should be a standard and not a trend.

As a NEW resident of Maine I find it so much easier to live sustainably in Portland than I did in Los Angeles. The magazine connects with my soul. I am so over green washing and applaud this step forward. The article about graypants is my favorite...

Lonny Magazine is still going strong...still has a decidedly east coast flair with a BROAD range of topics.

New to the scene is RUE. Because it is SO NEW I will let you discover it for yourself:

While printed shelter magazines are making a recovery in 2010 (details here), I find it encouraging that out of a rough economy came wonderful online shelter magazines...that are free for all to enjoy. The inherent cravings for creativity and beauty cannot be dampened or denied. Fiore Studio believes that good design should be accessible to everyone, regardless of budget.

How to hire an Interior Designer: Part 2

Ok This is part 2, the nitty-gritty details about hiring a designer.
My personal choice at Fiore Studio is to create an agreement, or contract, after the first meeting with prospective clients. I recap what I understand to be their priorities and how I charge for services and goods. It explains what and where we purchase, how long we work together, etc. The client has time to review, make additions and changes, and we each sign it. It's truly an agreement. Legally it's a contract. It's only one page long! :) I encourage every consumer to ask for and expect a written agreement whenever they embark on custom projects. The clarification it provides it priceless and keeps the design process running smoothly.

An interior design contract is a legal document which spells out the terms of a relationship between an interior designer and a client. Professional organizations of interior designers highly recommend that everyone who embarks on an interior design project obtain a contract and review the contract carefully. Many interior designers maintain basic contracts which can be adjusted to fit minor jobs, and a contract can also be customized for a project with the assistance of a lawyer, as might be the case with major projects such as completing the interior design scheme for a hotel or office building.
In an interior design contract, a number of stipulations are spelled out. The contract clearly lays out the scope of the project and the responsibilities of the interior designer, and it establishes deadlines for various stages of the project. Interior design contracts also include a discussion of the fees involved, including an explanation of the estimate for the project, and the types of expenses which may arise while the project is completed.

As with other types of business contracts, an interior design contract also includes a section which discusses dispute resolution options and what will happen if either party involved decides to break the contract. This section may mandate that the designer or client retain the services of a particular company which specializes in arbitration, in the event that the relationship becomes problematic. It also spells out which party is responsible for which costs in the event that the contract is broken.

The goal of an interior design contract is to make sure that both parties have a clear understanding of the expectations of the other party. It also acts as insurance in the event that the project goes sour, and outlines responsibilities of all parties. The contract may also discuss the use of subcontractors and consultants, and spell out special concerns like ecologically friendly sourcing of materials or the use of hypoallergenic materials in the design scheme.

The contract is typically written by the interior designer after a consultation with the client about the project. Clients have the right to take the contract home and review it, and for large projects, it may be a good idea to get a lawyer to review the contract. If clients have a dispute about a clause in the contract, want to add material to the contract, or are concerned about parts of the document, they should bring up these issues before signing the contract. Clients should never sign an interior design contract without reading it, and they should not be afraid to request changes to make sure that they feel comfortable with the terms of the interior design contract.

Out of the Box: What Watt? Chandelier- A Green commentary

What Watt?

What Watt? is a memorial to and a celebration of the humble incandescent lightbulb. It’s a spherical chandelier, 1010mm in diameter made up of 1243 suspended bulbs of various shape and size, illuminated by a single low-energy light source. By 2011, all forms of incandescent light bulb will have been phased out in favour of greener alternatives. What Watt? marks the passing of a beautiful design that has remained relatively unchanged since its invention 130 years ago.

Only 10 of these were made-obviously it was detailed and time consuming work. I think of how delicate the glass is and wonder how the installations went!

Incandescent bulbs are a way of the past. They are outlawed in many EU countries. Most of us Portland Maine (ers) are well versed in CFLs already. I love this artistic farewell to what was a part of life for over 100 years. Onward!

With only a few minutes to spare, I give you my Turqouise of the week:

Crate and Barrel, thanks for keeping it simple and chic.

The reason this photo is so eye catching is repetition and symmetry. You can fold it in half and they are mirror images...and great use of color!

Anyone can replicate this look and symmetrical style. It's very user friendly.

The Clara chair. Simple but comfy! I sat on this in their L.A. store. Being rather tall I can be picky about comfortable upholstery, and this was comfortable in spite of being a petite chair. The turqouise is a rather deep, calm shade that pairs easily with many other colors.

Indoor/Outdoor Fabrics have rapidly evolved over the last 10 years. I have seen (and specified) soft textured stripes and even faux chenille textures-all for INDOOR upholstery. Sunbrella leads the way in durable fabrics and supplies the higher end fabric houses such as Kravet, Robert Allen, Pindler and Pindler, etc.

Most of us know sunbrella fabrics apply to outdoor furniture and awnings, but they are beautiful and practical indoors:

GREAT examples from Joe Ruggiero and Sunbrella-Modern, clean upholstery done in outdoor fabric. These aren't your neighbors patio chairs! Obviously Sunbrella does well in sunlight-no need to worry about fabric fading in UV rays. But the most overlooked and valuable benefit of the fabric is how difficult it is to stain! If a child spills his juice box, the doggie jumps up with muddy paws, or glass of wine is spilled-chances are it won't even soak into the fabric to create a stain. Just wipe up and forget about it!

Plastic dining set? I have higher expectations of an estate so unique. It needs just a brief visit from a professional interior designer to be ready for the pages of any high end shelter magazine. I know "It's a rental", but there are many durable, elegant (and sustainable) resources out there.

The website also mentions the house is a perfect location for a private wedding. How unique!

I am missing Long Beach right now, so a sublime reference was in order.

New England summers are all the cliche wondefullness I expected. Humidity, seasells, lobster, coastline and (expected but highly underestimated) mosquitos. I am going shell hunting next week (see my shell chandelier blog here). I remember some great spots on the islands off the Maine coast.

Paul Plante at Gleason Fine Art has an interesting bio and a beautifully detailed body of work:

Father Paul Plante focuses his work on the eyes of warblers, herons, swallows, and other birds in his 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"; oil pastel paintings. The compositions call to mind the cosmos and the mysteries of life, as well as the spirit of his subjects. He also explores the cosmic nature of the surface of an apple or a plum. He says that "being a priest and being an artist are naturals to me. One is into a spiritual and religious realm and the other is on the edge of it." The works are sometimes framed singly, and sometimes arranged in compositions of 9, 12, 15, and 25. In addition to exhibiting with the Caldbeck, he has had solo shows at Colby College in Waterville, ME, and the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, ME, and at Neilsen Gallery in Boston, The Arts and Cultural Center in Biloxi, Mississippi, numerous other galleries throughout the country. He has a BFA from Maine College of Art Portland, and degrees in Philosophy and Theology from the University of Montreal, and St. Paul's University in Ottawa.
